What Is Happ Proxy and When to Use It

Alongside its full VPN tunnel, Happ also supports a proxy mode built on Xray-core. Both modes use the same key issued in the Telegram bot, but they handle device traffic differently. Here's how proxy differs from VPN and when it's the better fit.

How VPN mode works in Happ

In VPN mode, Happ creates a virtual network interface and routes all device traffic through it — browser, apps, and system services alike. It's the simplest, most predictable connection method: there's nothing to configure per app, everything works right after the key is added.

How Happ Proxy mode is different

Proxy mode works differently: Happ runs a local proxy server based on Xray-core, and only the apps or browsers configured to use that proxy send their traffic through it. This is useful when you want to redirect specific programs rather than the entire device, without creating a system-wide VPN tunnel.

When proxy makes more sense than VPN

Happ Proxy mode is handy when:

  • you only want to route a browser or a specific app through the server;
  • a system-wide VPN conflicts with other software or network settings;
  • you need finer control over which traffic goes through the server and which stays direct.

If you want more precise per-app routing while staying in VPN mode, check the split tunneling guide at /en/split-tunneling/.

What the proxy mode runs on

Both VPN and Proxy modes run on Xray-core and use the same key from the Happ Telegram bot — there's no separate encryption protocol to configure. The difference is only in how traffic enters the tunnel. See the full breakdown on /en/proxy/.

Turning on Proxy in the app

Proxy mode is enabled directly in Happ's settings on the supported platform, and desktop users also have a dedicated Happ Proxy Utility that simplifies integrating it with other software. For the general connection walkthrough, see /en/setup/.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What's the main difference between Proxy and VPN in Happ?

VPN routes all device traffic through a tunnel, while Proxy only routes the apps or browser configured to use the local proxy.

Do I need a separate key for proxy mode?

No, it uses the same key as VPN mode, issued in the Happ service Telegram bot.

Which platforms support Happ Proxy?

It's available on Happ's supported platforms, with a dedicated utility for desktop systems that simplifies setup.

Should I use VPN or Proxy if I'm not sure?
